Go!
A Devotion By
Pastor Bobby
When I was ten years old, I was staying up late one weekend watching TV. Just by chance, I switched the channel to a Christian station. The movie The Cross and the Switchblade was playing, which is the story of how God called David Wilkerson to gang ministry and how God used David to reach Nicky Cruz.
I don't know why, but I couldn't pull myself away from watching the movie. I mean, I was ten—there had to be more exciting stuff on besides a Christian movie from the 1970s. At this time in my life, I would say I was a Christian in word only, which I have talked about before. But I still just couldn't turn the channel. During this time, my dad came out of his bedroom and asked what I was doing. I told him that I was watching some movie. He instantly knew what the movie was and said that he had read and loved the book. He then went on to tell me that it was based on a true story and shared the whole plot with me. A couple of days later, he found the book and gave it to me.
I tell this story because it stuck with me—even when I went through struggles, when I finally accepted Christ with my whole soul, and ultimately when I was called to be a pastor. At that time, I didn't know that calling would be for street ministry. But that's not the main point of this devotional. The main point is this: in the beginning of the story of The Cross and the Switchblade, David Wilkerson was a pastor of a church in the hills of Pennsylvania. One day he saw an article in Life magazine. The article was about gang members who were on trial for murder, and he heard God tell him to Go. So he did. He tried to ask the judge for time to tell the gang members about Jesus, but he ended up getting ejected for making a scene. David then went back home feeling defeated. But it didn't stop there. God again told him to Go. So he went again. This time he had better results. God used him to bring the Gospel and reach countless people. Not only that, but God used that story to reach a young boy from Colorado years later. And it's all because he went when God told him to Go.
We as believers must Go as well. Jesus tells us to:
“And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.””
— Matthew 28:18–20 (ESV)
We don't know how God is going to use us. We don't know if there will be instant results or if God is planting seeds. But we must still Go so God can use us. What it means to Go is that when God tells us to do something, we Go and do it. It could be going to tell gang members about Jesus. It could be going to be a missionary in a different country. It could be going to tell a family member about Jesus. The main thing is that we Go. As I said, we don't know the results, but we just Go to be used by Jesus.
SO GO!!
